Single Review: Empire Of The Sun – Alive

When the return of The Sleepy Jackson’s Luke Steele and Pnau’s Nick Littlemore as Empire Of The Sun was announced, it seemed an interesting prospect. Mythologizing their ongoing battle with ‘The King Of Shadows’, it was clear ‘the Emperor and the Prophet’ had big plans. And for our part, with ‘Walking On A Dream’ and ‘We Are The People’ vaguely at the back of our minds and spring sort of on the way, “Now,” we thought, “would be a great time to hear some spacey dance.”

Because that’s essentially what ‘Alive’ is. From the echoey, familiar synth intro, to the friendly thudding bass beat and even the wispy vocals that originally made the band distinctive, ‘Alive’ is all in all, just another well-crafted dance/pop track. In fact, should you be anywhere near a Greek beach this year, I rate your chances of stumbling across ‘Alive’ through the overly bassy speakers of a faux-Hawaiian hut-bar as almost 99%. I mean, “Loving every minute / cause you make me feel so Aaaaliiiive” is pretty much straight out of page one of ‘Summer Chorus Lines For Dummies’. And, with some backing shouts reminiscent of the first Go! Team album and the generally slick production that characterised all of Empire’s work before this, it’s an altogether pleasing listen.

So thanks Empire, I’m sure we’ll enjoy hearing this about. But take note, you Emperors and Prophets who ‘have never abandoned hope': this is not the second enduring revolution of dance music. This is but the first of many a nice, sing-along track for the summer of 2013.
